Some people may say that dropping R7,800 on a wireless speaker is a bad idea. Not Stuff, but people. But what if that speaker was something… more? Say, the eternal resting place of your nana? That’s good, because Spotify and Liquid Death have teamed up to develop that very thing: an urn that doubles as a Bluetooth speaker. No, really.
But can it run Doom?
It’s possible that this was the work of some lowly intern at Spotify HQ accidentally hitting ‘publish’ on the streamer’s next April Fool’s joke a little early, but the $500 listing on Liquid Death’s website tells us that someone at Spotify’s marketing department came up with the idea and ran with it. Go and have a look for yourself, then.
Unfortunately, that’s about all you can do for the moment. Unsurprisingly, neither Spotify nor Liquid Death has put much stock into this urn’s, er, stock, and has only committed to selling off the low quantity to users in the States. Perhaps it’s for the best. The speaker is built right into the lid, and doesn’t exactly fill us with confidence.

The real question is what playlist you bring with you when you inevitably pop your clogs? While the subject’s ashes will mostly be at the mercy of their remaining family members, Spotify has debuted the Eternal Playlist Generator to help you decide what’ll play at the golden gates. It’ll do so by asking the user a couple of questions, like “What’s your eternal vibe?” or “What’s your go-to ghost noise?”, and then moving forward from there.
That, too, has been withheld from the rest of the world, according to the streamer’s announcement. Despite all that, we managed to get our very own eternal playlist right here in South Africa. It’s as simple as clicking here (mobile only), answering four seemingly random questions, and voila. Your very own Eternal Playlist.
