You likely can’t remember the last time DStv didn’t raid your bank account for a few extra bucks every April, all for the promise of Friends reruns. Many might think the hike is a foregone conclusion, but this year, MultiChoice is switching things up. For the first time in many years, it’s skipping the yearly price hike.
Big win for DStv subscribers
That’s down to MultiChoice’s new Groupe Canal+ leadership, which feels the move is necessary to correct course after the previous management frittered away money and bled subscribers. MultiChoice Group CEO, David Mignot, confirmed that DStv prices would not go up in 2026, in an interview with TechCentral this week.
“No, we are not,” Mignot said in response to a question about potential hikes. “I want to give a clear answer, because we are building subscribers, so it’s not the right time to increase pricing.” He later clarified that “[MultiChoice] are not planning, as we speak, any price increase.” It almost makes up for the lack of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms streaming anywhere in South Africa. At least we still have Die Kantoor.
Last year, DStv’s price increases ranged from 2.1% for the Compact package, while DStv Access saw a hike as high as 7.9%. Showmax, too, saw major price hikes for all of its subscription tiers. It’s unclear whether MultiChoice will see a surge in prices, though South Africa’s home-grown streamer doesn’t usually see annual increases.
