Volvo has been teasing its newest EV since late last year and, last night, finally unveiled its new EX60. The surprise at the event was the inclusion of a second model of its electric vehicle, the EX60 Cross Country. Guess what that one does?
If your guess was ‘Pretty much what the base model does, but on different wheels,’ you’re… actually most of the way there. Wheels “that are exclusive to Cross Country models,” an extra 20mm of ride height with a further 20mm available via adjustment, and Cross Country branding are the main factors. That, and two different all-wheel-drive models: A P10 AWD Electric with 640km of range, and a P12 version with longer (though unspecified for now) range, to be launched later.
Zero to EX60
The main Volvo EX60 is where all of the important details come out, since most of the specs and features match the Cross Country model. The Swedish company has indeed opted for 810km of range and 400kW of fast charging, capable of adding 340km to your trip in a claimed ten minutes.
The EV arrives in three variants — a rear-wheel-drive P6 with 620km of range, an all-wheel-drive P10 with 660km of range, and the all-wheel-drive P12, with the full 810km at drivers’ disposal. Drivers can expect 275kW of power and 480Nm of torque from the RWD model, and at least 375kW/710Nm from the AWD versions. Top speeds are capped at 180km/h.
Volvo wasn’t kidding about stuffing massive amounts of computing inside the EX60, either. Gemini integration into the HuginCore-powered cabin software “lets you have natural and personalised conversations without having to remember specific commands.” It also allows for a “seamless and no-lag infotainment system, [where] screens respond quickly, maps load instantly, voice assistants understand passengers better, and everything feels smooth.” But we’ll have to see that in person to believe it.
When we’ll actually see it is still uncertain, but the Volvo EX60 is definitely coming to South Africa. Likely in the third quarter of the year, so we’re expecting a local reveal at the end of August at this year’s Festival of Motoring.
