Those grand Lego sets featuring more than 9,000 pieces and a price double that are impressive, sure, but all the average person can do is stare longingly and wipe the drool from their chin. So it makes our excitement for Lego’s new, and only 357-piece DeLorean set from Back to the Future warranted, wouldn’t you say?
Back to the ATM
It’s a little ironic that the ‘Time Machine from Back to the Future‘ meant to celebrate the iconic first film’s 21 October 1985 date (if you’re not sure why that date, you need a little more culture in your life) will skip it entirely, with pre-orders only expected to ship on 1 January 2026 — decidely after the film’s 40th anniversary.
Not that we’re complaining. The set might be small in stature, but it’s got (almost) everything needed to complete the movie-perfect prop on your shelf. The DeLorean — which can even transform into the flying Back to the Future II model — has more than enough room to fit Marty McFly and Doc Brown minifigures side-by-side.

It’s how you get those minifigs inside that’s a problem. There are no gull-wing doors here, likely to accommodate the DeLorean’s Lego Speed Champions format. This seems a fair compromise for a set that’s this minuscule and relatively inexpensive compared to the rest of Lego’s catalogue.
If gull-wing doors are a must, there’s always the larger 1,872-piece Lego DeLorean that’ll set you back at least R3,400. Lego’s new set is starting to look a little more welcoming, right? Either way, you’ll need to wait until 1 January to lay your hands on the set. South Africa’s Lego Certified Store, Great Yellow Brick, doesn’t have the set listed yet, but it won’t be long before it does. And, small comfort it may be, it tends not to jack up the Dollar price.
