Ster-Kinekor, South Africa’s largest local movie exhibitor, has announced the return of classic movies to its big screens in what it calls ‘Throwback Cinema’. Four titles are scheduled for May and will carry a discounted admission fee of R50.
First up, Ster-Kinekor is throwing it back to 2002 with the musical crime drama Chicago, directed by Rob Marshall and starring Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere. It will begin airing tomorrow, 10 May.

Next week Friday, 17 May, will see the 1998 romance fantasy Meet Joe Black return to the silver screen. Martin Brest called the shots here who you might not be familiar with. But you’ve probably heard of stars Brad Pitt and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Sticking with romance, the 1999 classic Notting Hill, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, is set to air on 24 May.
Finally, on 31 May, Marty McFly and Doc Brown will revisit screens in their modified DeLorean in the 1985 Robert Zemeckis-directed sci-fi comedy Back to the Future. Fans of the series hoping for a reboot or remake better not miss this one. In a 2015 interview, Zemeckis said neither of those would happen in his or his partner Bob Gale’s lifetime. They’re only in their 70s so it’s probably better not to wait.
All of Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema titles will carry the R50 ticket price, are already available for pre-booking, and will air at various SK cinemas across the country. Those include Fourways, Sandton, Rosebank, Irene, and The Grove in Gauteng, Gateway in KwaZulu-Natal, and Somerset, Tygervalley, and V&A Waterfront in the Western Cape.
