Rain has officially entered the mobile network fray, unveiling its first 4G mobile network, taking the fight directly to South Africa’s three other major network operators – Vodacom, MTN and Telkom.
If that weren’t enough, the operator is rolling out rainOne, a new product that combines all of its services into one. This includes unlimited (and uncapped) data on a fixed- 5G connection for the home, plus free monthly calls and data across two mobile phones (there is a limit, but we’ll get to that). All for R560/m, with no long-term contracts involved.

Let’s cover that 4G network before we dive into the caveats of rainOne. The network uses 4G technology and includes high-definition calls, data and SMSs. According to the company, after it acquired 20MHz of spectrum from the 700MHz band back in 2022, it “is overlaying its existing 4G network with a new layer that provides for more comprehensive reach.”
It claims that due to its lack of 2G and 3G coverage, it can keep costs to a minimum and “offer significant value to the end user.”
“The expansion of the company’s network, both in terms of 5G coverage and spectrum acquisition, indicates that we are serious about being a major player in the mobile market as well,” said CEO Brandon Leigh.

One for all, and all for rainOne
Then there’s rainOne. New customers that are looking to sign up for rainOne will get access to the company’s 5G network for the home, with speeds of up to 30Mbps, including two SIM cards that offer 2GB of data, 60 minutes of calls and 100 SMSs per month.
For those that are already registered on the company’s 5G network, things will shake out a little differently. In a release, it stated that customers “can upgrade to rainOne for the same price as their current plans and gain the benefit of the mobile SIMs and free monthly calls and data for 2 phones, at no extra cost.”
