We’re edging closer to April’s bout of petrol and diesel price changes, with the Department of Energy making the changes official at midnight on Wednesday, 5 April. If the Central Energy Fund (CEF) is to be believed (and it usually is), diesel drivers might want to hold off on filling vehicles and jerry cans until the change. Petrol buyers… as you were.
Overall, the CEF’s latest data – captured yesterday, 22 March, shows promise for South Africa’s fuel prices. Just last week, we were discussing the possibility of a R0.30 increase in petrol prices, with diesel drivers facing a decrease of R0.15. That’s no longer the case, with a drastic change expected to affect both diesel and paraffin buyers.
Good news, everyone
The CEF’s predictions are not law and may change faster than the wind. The CEF makes its predictions based on the current US Dollar/Rand exchange and the global price of refined oil. The true deciders of the price – the Department of Energy – choose the final cost based on similar factors before the first Wednesday of a new month.
Here are your fuel price predictions (so far) for April 2023:
- Petrol 95: increase of 1 cent per litre (R0.01)
- Petrol 93: decrease of 1 cent per litre (R0.01)
- Diesel 0.05%: decrease of 55 cents per litre (R0.55)
- Diesel 0.005%: decrease of 56 cents per litre (R0.56)
- Illuminating Paraffin: decrease of 113 cents per litre (R1.13)

This is good news for everyone. Not just because the current predictions point to decreases almost entirely across the board. But because the trend for April’s petrol prices has been seeing a decrease every week. Who knows, we could be singing the Department of Energy’s praises come next week’s predictions with yet another decrease – hopefully in the petrol department.
