Dell has just announced the newest addition to the Alienware range. The new Alienware 15 joins the Alienware 16, 16X Aurora, and Alienware 18 Area-51 as the point of entry for anyone looking to spend the least amount of money on Alienware hardware. That said, it’s still packing some pretty decent specs that will appeal to mobile designers or anyone else looking for decent power on the go.
The Alienware 15 retains some of the design DNA that has long set other entries in the range apart from the rest of the market. But there are only so many ways to make a laptop. Expect the same bits in the same places as you’re used to. The 180° hinge was a little unexpected on a laptop like this, but we’re not complaining. The rounded edges where your palms sit will probably go a long way in daily use away from an external keyboard.
It uses a 15.3in display boasting a 1,920 x 1,200px resolution and a max refresh rate of 165Hz. Considering where this laptop sits in Dell’s Alienware lineup, we expect that to be a fairly standard LCD panel. If you want OLED, you’ll have to spend a lot more.
Visitor from a different world
For ports, this Alienware machine has all the bases covered. Along with the ye-olde barrel DC power port, you get a proper Ethernet port, a full-sized HDMI 2.1 port, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports (one Type-C, two Type-A), and one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. That last one will support DisplayPort 1.4a and Power Delivery up to 100W. There’s also a combo 3.5mm headphone/mic jack, of course.
For the internals, Dell is making this one available with choices. There are two AMD flavours: the Ryzen 7 260 or the Ryzen 5 220. If it’s Intel you’re looking for, you can have either the Core 7 240H or the Core 5 210H. You are encouraged to pair those with an Nvidia mobile GPU — the RTX 4050, 5050, or 5060 are on offer.
Dell doesn’t mention any RAM configurations because those tend to vary, but it does say that the Alienware 15 will allow users some upgradability, with two DDR5 slots and an extra spot for another M.2 Gen 4 NVMe. If we had to guess, 8GB and 16GB capacities would make sense with the other specs, with room to expand later if you want.
We have confirmed that South Africa will be receiving the Alienware 15 around the end of August, but local pricing is still under wraps.
