You may not like it, but this Wooden Duck is actually a Lego product, a remnant of a past before colourful plastic bricks became the in-thing at the Danish company. To celebrate Lego’s storied history, the company is giving away a scaled-down model of that very wooden duck — though made entirely out of the colourful plastic bricks this time.
Let’s go get some Lego

Yes, it’s actually giving them away. There are a couple of caveats to contend with, of course. One being the fact that only children can redeem the gift. Specifically, kids under the age of twelve. Typical. Even if your kid(s) would rather spend their days playing Fortnite, nothing is stopping you from dragging them to the nearest Lego store. Now that you mention it, that duck would look rather nice on a shelf…
“Step back in time to where the LEGO story began! One of the most iconic features in LEGO history, the original wooden duck was a popular toy from LEGO Founder and Master Carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen’s workshop in Billund, Denmark, and now it’s your turn to bring this playful classic to life in bricks! Whether you’re a lifelong LEGO fan or just love a charming build with a bit of history behind it, this little duck is the perfect nod to the creativity that started it all,” Lego said.
You’ll have until 30 January (next week Friday) to visit one of the seven Lego stores scattered around South Africa (Sandton City, Menlyn Park, Canal Walk, Gateway, Mall of Africa, V&A Waterfront, and Somerset Mall) to secure the freebie, though the company notes that this is a first-come, first-served promotion. In other words, it’s time to get going.
