Samsung’s tri-folding smartphone is no longer a secret, but it’s been standing in the shadows for some time. A new report out of Korea suggests that the hardware could make its first appearance as soon as this week, though it won’t be at an official Samsung unveiling.
The Korea Herald says that Samsung’s first tri-folding smartphone may turn up at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju, Korea’s North Gyeongsang Province, this week. That would let the company get the word out ahead of a projected release sometime this year.
Above the tri-fold
When it does release, it won’t be everywhere. The report says that the tech giant will target limited markets with limited numbers of the phone, at least at first. The motivation behind this isn’t certain, but Stuff remembers the teething troubles the first Galaxy Fold had when it launched in 2019.
Samsung could be looking to avoid a repeat by trialling its newest hardware in a more controlled fashion. Between 50,000 and 200,000 units of the dual-hinged device are expected to make it to retail. That’s an extremely minor number, but given the projected R49,000 ($2,800) launch pricing, testing the waters is probably a good idea.
Samsung’s tri-fold smartphone hasn’t got an official name — Galaxy Fold Ultra is one suggested possibility — but there’s a fair amount known about what it’ll include inside. The 6.5in outer display will be pure Samsung, while the three-segment 10in interior display could make this a go-to for rich folks who can’t get enough Netflix on the go. A Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset should live inside, and there’s talk of a 200MP 100x zoom main camera sensor on the rear. Plus extras, of course.
If Samsung’s first tri-fold does break cover this week, it’ll be at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit that runs from 31 October to 2 November. While you’re out enjoying Halloween this weekend, Samsung could have a treat of its own to hand out.
