Back in 2022, DStv made the unpopular decision to limit streaming of its services to a single screen. It’s taken a few years, but the choice has just been walked back.
Effectively, as of today, DStv Premium, Compact Plus, and Compact subscribers can stream to two screens at the same time. DStv Stream customers are also having an additional simultaneous device tacked onto their existing capabilities.
About time, DStv
At the time, the move to limit simultaneous streams was intended to combat password piracy. The easing of restrictions makes no mention of that or how it fared from 2022 to date. Instead, returning the functionality to subscribers “offers greater flexibility to customers, making it easier for them to watch what they want when they want”, according to the company.
The broadcaster points out that Premium subscribers now have access to four concurrent streams as part of their monthly subscription — two via DStv and two via Showmax. Compact and Compact Plus subscribers have the option to add Showmax to their accounts at a reduced cost. If not, their concurrent streaming options have still doubled to… two.
Multichoice CEO Byron du Plessis said, “With shifting viewing habits and growing connectivity, it’s the right time to bring back the second stream to supplement our overall value proposition.”
“With the return of the second stream, our customers have more opportunities to engage with the content they love, including the best local stories, world-class sport, as well as a variety of international content options.”
