It’s been roughly a month since WhatsApp officially integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its platform, and new updates are already inbound. The newest gives users the ability to interact with ChatGPT in more ways. They can now send voice notes and images to ChatGPT via WhatsApp.
ChatGPT on Whatsapp: chatbots in chatrooms
Users need to add the number 1 (800) CHAT-GPT (or: 1 (800) 242-8478) to find the GPT chat in the WhatsApp contact list and start conversing with the AI agent like they would on its native site. Yes, it works worldwide, in case you were wondering. Originally, users could only chat to it via text. Now users can also send voice messages or images to add more nuance to communication.
Users can also link higher ChatGPT subscription tiers onto the WhatsApp extension. It’s a bit trippy imagining people generating highly complex information through GPT’s powerful higher tiers without leaving Meta’s app.
Meta has had its own AI chatbot available for use since late 2023. We at Stuff have never used it, nor do we know anyone who has. Conversely, in early December 2024, it was confirmed that ChatGPT is seeing over 300 million monthly users. Meta may feel that its efforts are moving too slowly, prompting the social media giant to grab a piece of the OpenAI action.
OpenAI itself has had a rough time since DeepSeek went live last week. The Chinese AI platform claims to be as powerful as ChatGPT-4o and is supposed to have cost far less to build. That latter point has caused OpenAI, its parent company Microsoft, and the premier GPU maker in the world Nvidia to experience huge wipeouts in stock value in recent weeks.
