Chinese smartphone manufacturer Realme might be the first mainstream brand to launch a phone packing an 8,000mAh battery. After dropping its GT 7 Pro flagship with a hefty 6,500mAh battery, the company is looking to entrench its dominance as a producer of some of the biggest batteries you can buy.
Realme leading the charge
The company’s latest flagship, the Realme GT 7 Pro boasts a 6,500mAh silicon-carbon battery, blowing out the flagship standard of 5,000mAh away. The company also claims it can fully charge in 37 minutes with its 120W SuperVOOC power brick. Even the lower-end Realme 12 Pro Plus 5G includes a 5,000mAh battery. They both charge at 120W and 67W respectively.
According to well-known leaker Digital Chat Station on the Chinese social media platform Weibo (via Notebookcheck), the smartphone maker is testing three new battery variations to improve upon the GT 7 Pro’s. One is a 7,000mAh battery that supports 120W fast charging for a 42-minute full charge. Another is a 7,500mAh battery supporting 100W fast charging with a full charge in 55 minutes. The last is an 8,000mAh behemoth supporting 80W fast charging for a full charge in 70 minutes.
Questions remain about Realme’s intentions with this new battery. Many speculate it could debut with the Realme GT 8 Pro, which could reach shelves in 2025. From these options, it seems the company has yet to make a final choice between capacity and charge speed. One wonders how much return on investment the company can get by enhancing what they’re already best at, but it’s hard not to salivate at the possibility of smartphones with multi-day battery lives.
Comparing the new Realme battery’s worst charging speeds to smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung, the company’s cells stack up quite well. 80W charging, while relatively slow compared to the fastest charging phones, is still far better than most of the best iPhones and Galaxy models.
