Apple reportedly schedules iPhone 16 unveiling for 10 September

Once a year, like clockwork, Tim Cook stands around Apple Park on a roof or in a field to unveil the iPhone (insert bigger number), and maybe some new AirPods and/or Apple Watch, alongside a slew of Pro and Pro Max-touting devices. The event, which is Apple’s biggest showing of the year, usually falls in the early stages of September.

2024 is no different.

At least, that’s what Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had to say on the subject. Apple has yet to confirm any official dates – hell, we don’t even have a theme or tagline (AI puns are hard) – but Gurman is confident the smartphone manufacturer has Tuesday, 10 September marked in its books.

The Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

Stuff, as usual, will make the trek to Apple’s YouTube channel to get the first look at what features it’ll copy from Samsung next so that you don’t have to. If Apple’s last two September events are anything to go by, we imagine it’ll retain the 19h00 SAST starting time Tim Cook is so fond of.

This year, the iPhone 16 is on the menu – rounding out the iPhone’s first year of fully embracing the USB-C port. Starters include the next in line for the company’s Watch Series, which enters its tenth iteration and possibly a further update to the Watch Ultra 2, while dessert promises to deliver updates to the company’s low and mid-range AirPods a much-needed refresh.

If all goes to plan, users could have their devices in hand as early as the following week by 20 September. South Africa, being South Africa, usually gets their hands on new Apple products a week after that, making 27 September the most likely launch date locally. Pricing, as ever, remains to be seen.

Whatever the pricing, we’re guessing it’ll be more than the iPhone 16 is worth, with Gurman reporting minor upgrades, such as larger displays on the Pro models, improved camera features, a dedicated side button to make snapping pics that much simpler, as well as a bump to a new A18 Bionic chipset. That’ll be $900, please.
