Gamescom Opening Night Live – here’s how to tune in this evening

Gamescom 2024 header

Our prayers have finally been answered. Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, which will see the king of hosting, Geoff Keighley, take centre stage in Cologne, Germany, is officially scheduled to kick off at 20h00 SAST this evening – a far cry from the midnight-or-later showings South African gamers usually have to contend with.

Whether Gamescom’s Opening Night Live is worth the watch, however, is entirely up to you. Geoff Keighley, who has returned to emcee the annual event for 2024, has at least given fans a basic idea of what to expect from Opening Night Live, with previews for Black Ops 6, Civilization VII, and Indiana Jones hitting the big screen.

Gamescom 2024 has arrived

In a desperate bid to quell the tears flowing from eagerly waiting fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong flooding the comments of Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, Keighley tweeted (X’ed?) out that TeamCherry’s swansong would not be gracing Germany with its presence. Make of that what you will.

Despite the loss of our (and Steam’s) most anticipated game, we’ll still be tuning in to Opening Night Live all the same. If you’d like to imitate us, you can do so by returning to this article at 19h15 this evening through the embedded video above. Or you could turn up right as things get good, at 20h00.

As is usually the case with most gaming events, the mystery is half the fun. Keighley has, unfortunately, removed that aspect from Opening Night Live – thanks to a tweet that details most of the big reveals headed to Cologne this evening, as seen below:

There is hope that Keighley’s got an actual reveal or two tucked up his sleeve, at least judging by the end of his tweet. “There will also be many new game announcements, surprises and special guests,” he said.

Even if Keighley’s “game announcements” and “surprises” turn out to be yet another excuse to get Hideo Kojima on stage for fifteen minutes,  we’re betting it’ll be better than the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle footage, which, if it’s reminiscent to Xbox’s Showcase… will be your gap to hit the bathroom.
