Vox Telecom is the latest South African internet service provider to launch two of its own fixed 5G packages. They offer up to 300Mbps speeds (depending on your coverage) and uncapped data with 1TB and 2TB Fair Usage Policy (FUP) thresholds for R900/m and R1,600/m respectively.
These packages might be a first for Vox but they are far from the first fixed 5G connections available to South Africans – Rain claims that title.
Still, better late than never, right?
Vox brings 5G to the home
Vox launched its 5G service in May earlier this year and is now starting to punt its new offering to all and sundry.
Chris Boshoff, senior product manager at Vox, says the packages are “designed to be competitive on both pricing and service delivery” and would ensure customers experience “the exceptional speeds and capabilities of 5G within a well-developed, reliable network.”
While Boshoff is probably talking about Vox’s ‘well-developed and reliable network’ he could also be alluding to the fact that the 5G aspect of these packages is courtesy of MTN’s ‘well-developed and reliable network.’
One of the benefits of the ISP’s 5G packages (or any 5G connection, really), is the improved latency over LTE connections. “The value of low latency cannot be understated,” agrees Boshoff. “It is an essential ingredient in delivering real-time data analytics and decision-making and it is central to the capabilities of next-generation voice, video and gaming solutions.”

While the ISP’s 5G packages include rather generous FUP thresholds, your line will be throttled to just 1Mbps should you exceed them, according to its terms and conditions.
It’s worth noting that these are fixed 5G packages and are not meant for mobile use. “If you do move your router, the SIM will be “soft locked” and can only be reactivated once you return to the original address,” states an FAQ. However, subscribers do have the option to add a secondary address.
Both 5G packages are available as SIM-only deals if you already have a compatible 5G router. If you need one, you have the option to buy one separately for R3,300 or rent one for R190/m.
