The Internet in South Africa can be confusing. Whether it’s choosing from the million-or-so ISPs around the country when it comes to picking a home internet package, or something as simple (in theory) as deciding on your smartphone’s data package. MTN South Africa is combatting an issue it helped create with the launch of MTN Yellow, a ‘simplified’ approach to mobile connectivity within the country.
Rather than bombard customers with the usual influx of confusing terminology, high prices and limitations, Yellow is designed to be an affordable package that bundles mobile data and talk time into a single, simple-to-follow and implement system. Starting at R100/m and going up to R400/m, MTN Yellow includes the ability for customers to sign up on a month-to-month plan, meaning it can be cancelled at any time.
Let it mellow
“After listening to what our customers wanted from their voice and data packages, MTN developed Yellow Plans which we believe are the most user-friendly mobile contracts offered in South Africa. Swept away are the complex add-ons and the splits between voice-centric and data-centric offers, further complicated with all-net and on-net minutes or specific time-bound data” says MTN South Africa’s GM, Bertus Van der Vyver.
While MTN is selling these packages as simple-to-follow and easily cancellable, it will also sell them on 24- or 36-month contracts when bundled alongside “the latest smartphones.”
Available to current, new, or returning MTN customers, Yellow’s starting bundle at R100/m includes 750MB anytime data and 25 minutes of talk time — which features no limitations and can be used across all networks, not just MTN’s. The opposite end of the spectrum, which will cost R400/m, offers 6GB of monthly anytime data and 300 minutes.
Better yet, MTN says that customers under the Yellow banner will be able to share their data with up to five other MTN members.

“We believe that our Yellow Plans will meet the needs of today’s customers. With radical simplification at its core, MTN’s Yellow Plans, offer customers what they really want: connectivity without complexity and benefits that they don’t get to use,” concludes Van der Vyver.
MTN Yellow is available at physical MTN stores, or the operator’s website, though we haven’t yet been able to find anything confirming that. It’s worth noting that the Essential R100/m plan is only available by visiting an MTN store near you.
