When Stuff’s editor-in-chief, Toby Shapshak said that Amazon’s recent launch in South Africa would make “all the other e-commerce players who don’t want to see their lunch being eaten lift their game,” he wasn’t kidding. Shoprite Group’s Checker’s Sixty60 app is getting a major rework, “enabling customers to shop for over 10,000 larger Checkers Hyper products, with same-day delivery scheduled within a 60-minute time slot,” it announced today.
What are those?
The revamped Checkers Sixty60 app will allow customers to expand their online shopping abilities to more than just groceries. Specifically, it will include larger items, “…ranging from camping and outdoor gear to small appliances, baby products, toys, kitchen and home electronics, gardening and pool equipment.”
Better yet, all these items will be sold at “supermarket prices,” and will make use of Checker’s shiny new delivery vans, which are being integrated into the retailer’s existing fleet of vehicles. Checkers is also promising “lightning-fast delivery” on all those new items, which means it’s maintaining the 60-minute delivery guarantee it held when the app was solely grocery-based.
“We’re confident that the next iteration of Sixty60 will again disrupt online retail in South Africa. Our precision delivery promise means no more waiting at home all day for your general merchandise order to arrive. Customers can now choose the 60-minute time slot in which they’d like their Hyper delivery to arrive, with the same to-the-minute driver tracking they’ve become accustomed to on their grocery orders,” says Neil Schreuder, Chief of strategy and innovation for the Shoprite Group.
There’s currently no word on when the revamped Sixty60 app will launch countrywide, though a beta version is available now to customers living in these parts of Cape Town: Kuils River, Brackenfell, Durbanville, Bellville, Goodwood, Edgemead, Milnerton, Century City, Table View, Blouberg, Parklands, Rondebosch, Observatory, Gardens, Sea Point and Camps Bay.
This has been done to “ensure a seamless customer experience,” by the time a proper launch is ready.
