With Amazon finally entering the South African online retail scene, though to somewhat subdued applause, Takealot finally has some real competition. To that end, the latter has launched TakealotMore — a monthly subscription designed to give the retailer’s die-hard customers access to “unlimited” “free” deliveries across Takealot. Mr D has been included in the deal, too (Ts & Cs apply).
“This groundbreaking subscription service offers millions of South Africans exclusive monthly benefits to eliminate delivery costs and enhance shopping convenience,” Takealot said in a press release. We’ll have to see about that. Considering Amazon’s Prime-less landing, Takealot could solidify its position as the leader of the industry.
TakealotMore has already launched on the retailer’s website as of today, 10 May, and will be rolled out to the app from Monday, 13 May.
Bog Standard
Depending on your delivery needs, TakealotMore offers two separate subscription tiers. The cheaper of the two, TakealotMore Standard, costs R40/m while Premium will pull R100 out of your wallet every month. Fortunately, both tiers include a 7-day free trial to thoroughly test Takealot’s claims.
Subscribing to the R40/m ‘Standard’ tier will unlock unlimited next-day deliveries and collections, plus two same-day deliveries and collections per month (two deliveries + two collections). Unfortunately, the caveat here is that these benefits are only applicable to orders with a minimum spend of R500 or more, even for next-day deliveries.
As for the Mr. D perks, Standard subscribers are eligible for one free ‘Restaurant/Shop’ delivery per month, as long as they spend more than R150 on the order. There’s also one free grocery delivery per month provided the order totals R350 or more. It’s an interesting proposition, though may not be considered ‘worth it’ by many due to the R500 minimum order spend.

Primed to take the lead
TakealotMore Premium, on the other hand, appears to be a far more substantial offering.
Sure, it’s R100/m, but the benefits are worth it if Takealot or Mr D is visiting your house every other day. For one, customers unlock unlimited free same-day delivery (R500 order minimum), next-day deliveries (no order minimum), weekend deliveries (no order minimum) and 10 free deliveries involving ‘heavy/bulky items’ a month.
That alone is worth the price tag. Throw in the unlimited ‘free’ collections that require no order minimum, or the unlimited grocery delivery (R350 order minimum) and five free restaurant/shop deliveries per month. We’ve yet to test out the subscription, but we could see TakealotMore Premium being an extremely successful venture.
