Across the seas in China, Huawei Technologies Co. recently released a quartet of new ‘Pura’ smartphone models that seem to replace the company’s long-standing P-series devices.
Other than the name change, Huawei presumably hopes its new line will maintain the momentum it has built after a somewhat surprising (at least for most folks around the world) resurgence in 2023 owing to the launch of the Mate 60 range and its Chinese-manufactured Kirin 9000s 5G-capable chipset.
Pura leads the wei
Huawei made little fuss about its latest launch, with an announcement post on WeChat doing the heavy lifting. That appears to be all the company needed as the news trended across Chinese social media channels.
The main selling point of the P-series was always its strong photography performance, as seen in last year’s P60 Pro, so it makes sense that the headlining feature of the top-specced device, the Pura 70 Ultra, is its advanced camera system. It features a large 1in main 50MP sensor complete with a retractable lens and variable aperture.

A close second to the camera system is the unconfirmed but more-than-likely Kirin 9010 5G-capable chipset. It is reported to offer slightly improved performance over the Kirin 9000s, according to early Geekbench results (via GSMArena). It might be a while before these Chinese-made chipsets reach the performance levels of their Snapdragon counterparts, but then that company doesn’t have strict sanctions to deal with.
With flagship-worthy specs elsewhere, we’d love to see at least a few of the new Pura 70 devices, particularly the Ultra, show up in South Africa — although that is yet to be confirmed.
