Nvidia’s secret “TrueHDR” tool uses AI for real-time HDR-gaming conversion

Nvidia TrueHDR discovered

It’s almost impossible to hide things from people these days. Nvidia’s yet-to-be-announced “TrueHDR” tool has been discovered in the latest Game Ready Driver (version 551.23) by a user on NexusMods with the handle ’emoose’.

The driver reportedly contains a hidden profile with evidence that Nvidia is working on a “TrueHDR” tool which supposedly leverages AI to add HDR (High Dynamic Range) to SDR games (Standard Dynamic Range) in real time. The same Game Ready Driver version already uses AI to power Nvidia RTX Video HDR which does the same real-time SDR-to-HDR conversion but for videos.

A TrueHDR day may come, but it is not this day (officially)

Nivida hasn’t mentioned anything official about the “TrueHDR” tool and the fact that it was hidden should tell you it isn’t quite Game-Ready yet. But that hasn’t stopped the modder ’emoose’ from making it ready and available to test right now — provided you’re running Windows 11 and have an RTX graphics card, of course. If you’re interested, check out the mod page for the download link and setup instructions. From what we saw, it seemed rather straightforward.

Judging from the mod page’s comment section, it seems like most users have seen success across older games running DirectX 9 to newer titles using the DirectX 12 API. If you’ve struggled with Windows AutoHDR before, this unofficial tool could bring a notable improvement to your HDR gaming experience. Or it could stuff things up completely — a risk carried by any unofficial mod like this.

Along with Windows 11 and a Tensor core-touting GPU, you’ll also obviously need a monitor that supports HDR. We’ve included our top five suggested monitors in the upcoming issue of the magazine but if you can’t wait for that (and you have deep pockets) just get the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM and call it a day. You won’t be sorry.
