After the tirade of Black Friday deals (some of which are still live as of today), the last thing we feel like doing is whipping out our debit and credit cards again. We’re not data-hungry MTN customers however, which is the sort of people the African mobile network is targeting with the new launch of “Super Data bundles” under the Super Data price plan that launched back in June.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s… Super Data?
Those of you who chew through more than a typical user’s data allotment might want to take notes. “This price plan is designed to cater to customers who are heavy data users and residential users, by offering rich data volume bundles at an affordable price,” it said before announcing it would be expanding and restructuring the bundles included.
“We are enhancing the Super Data bundles,” MTN said. “These include channel expansion of the plan and repricing the bundles. The purpose of these amendments is to increase the Super Data market share while offering convenience to customers as the bundles have no contractual commitment. The benefits to MTN are to capitalize on growth in data demand and monetize data consumption.”
The bundles, which have been restructured to include more data for your buck, are only available to customers on the Super Data prepaid price plan. According to MTN, all new and current prepaid customers are eligible to make the switch to the plan and can do so through the MTN app or by dialling *137#. Did we mention it’s free?

Here are those bundles we keep blathering on about:
- 30GB Anytime Data – 30 days – R215/m
- 70GB Anytime Data – 30 days – R300/m
- 200GB Anytime Data – 30 days – R400/m
That all amounts to R7/GB, R4/GB and R2/GB respectively – far above the industry standard – even within MTN’s own data bundles not on the Super Data plan. We managed to find MTN’s Super Data plans on its website after a fair bit of searching, though it should be noted that all three plans are currently listed as “Temporarily out of stock.”
Goodbye Bozza Gigs?
MTN’s announcement came with the news that Super Data would be replacing Bozza Gigs as the prepaid default for portable router customers. Don’t worry, you won’t be losing out on any sign-on data benefits, all of which will be available through Super Data and will automatically transition to the new plan.
