If you’re a Netflix subscriber, we’ve got some bad news. You might want to sit down for this. Netflix has officially mailed out its last DVD might be hiking prices. Again. That’s not coming from the horse’s mouth directly but was initially reported on by The Wall Street Journal (via Reuters), which apparently has sources familiar with the matter.
Time to pay the streamer?
There’s no reason to panic just yet. It’s not clear whether South Africa is in the streamer’s crosshairs for the moment, though it is reportedly targeting “several markets globally,” and will likely kick things off in the US and Canada if the report is true. Having slipped by for some years now where its price hikes are concerned, South Africa might go unnoticed again. Or… it’s time to pay the piper streamer.
Fortunately, there’s no need to concern ourselves with the increase right now because Netflix will wait until “a few months” after the ongoing actors’ strike ends before issuing the hike. Netflix is just kind that way.
And, you know, because it’s booted plenty of leechers off the platform and into their own accounts.
Unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, that might be happening rather soon. SAG-AFTRA is currently still in negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and is set to return to talks on Wednesday. Having already outlasted the recently closed writers’ strike, Netflix will use the coming culmination of writers and actors in Hollywood to justify the alleged price hikes.
