There have been rumours for some time that Samsung has a smart ring in the works. The obvious name for such a device would be the Galaxy Ring but, until very recently, that title wasn’t very official. You’ll notice that we said ‘until very recently’.
The folks over at 9to5Google spotted explicit reference to a device called the Galaxy Ring in Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable app. That doesn’t tell us all that much about the actual device but there are some details about how the app will work. It’ll function the same way as every other Samsung wearable, where the main app downloads device-specific additions to make use of whatever functions this thing ends up having.
Ring-ing in the new year
There’s also an approximate release date provided you consider ‘some time in 2024’ a release date. That sticks it in a couple of windows — we’re most likely to see it show up in Jan/Feb or July 2024, when Samsung Unpacked does that thing it does. It’s rumoured that the earlier event is where the Galaxy Ring will take the stage for the first time.
So far there hasn’t been a leaked visual of the gadget but we can assume that it’ll look like a… well, a ring. There are a limited number of ways to design something like that unless you’re really into your gothic jewellery. Somehow we don’t see the largely conservative Samsung coming out with a spiked, jointed, haptic feedback-packing talon, no matter how much information it’s able to track and assess.
What it will do and how it will work is a mystery for now. Samsung is said to have health-tracking ambitions for the Galaxy Ring. We suspect it’ll compete directly with the Oura ring, which is the best-known of a handful of devices in the niche. Given how Samsung has taken the lead in the folding smartphone stakes, it’s not a stretch to expect similar performance for this unusual wearable as well. Eventually, anyway.
