What with Apple making a huge splash in the world of virtual reality, Meta obviously thinks some catching up is in order. WhatsApp will probably be one of the battlegrounds if a pending update for the messaging platform is any indication.
The folks over at WABetaInfo have come across information that Meta’s messaging service will be making the jump to virtual reality. Specifically to the Meta Quest, because the company owns that hardware. Plus, remember how the social network was going to make it big in the metaverse?
WhatsApp with VR?
Don’t get too excited though. The feature is still in the works and nobody (besides WhatsApp’s internal teams, we assume) can play with it yet. It’s also not exactly an extensive product overhaul. Instead, the Meta Quest is being made a compatible device, letting users specify the company’s virtual reality hardware as one of the devices you can add and operate your WhatsApp account on.
Making sure that all of the apps you own work on all of your own hardware is a sensible move. What isn’t known is whether the messaging app will work in a different manner, just because you’re looking at it through a headset while holding a couple of weird controllers. That would make the most sense to us — a more immersive VR experience would seem to be the way forward. But maybe we’re still a little starry-eyed over Apple’s vision of how FaceTime calls could work while in virtual reality.
