Instagram finally adds GIFs as a comment option

Instagram and Giphy

Unless you’ve tried using a GIF to comment on Instagram, you’ll probably find it shocking that this was impossible on the Meta-owned platform. Until now.

The platform’s head, Adam Mosseri, announced that users would finally be able to comment using GIFs. Mosseri made the announcement, which he called a “finally feature” during a chat on Instagram Channels with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, reports Engadget.

Thanks, we guess

We’d say it’s about time seeing that the ability to comment with Gifs is available on most platforms. Until now, Instagram users could comment using multimedia including images and videos from their devices and a range of stickers, but GIFs were not an option.

The additional feature will give users a bit more room to express themselves. The GIFs in question will be sourced from Giphy. This is despite a ruling last year by the UK’s competition watchdog, instructing Meta to sell Giphy due to competition concerns.

Developers at Meta’s photo and video-sharing social network have been giving Reels, the platform’s short-form video content section, some much-needed attention following TikTok’s explosive success. Mosseri also announced another addition to Reels in yet another attempt to goad TikTok users into switching back. He says Instagram is testing lyrics in Reels. Hopefully, this won’t be another GIF situation with the feature taking too long to become a reality.
