Amazon revives HBO’s cancelled Batman: Caped Crusader series

Batman: Caped Crusader coming to Prime

Even though HBO isn’t available in South Africa, we haven’t fallen deaf to the news of the company’s recent content purge of HBO Max, its own streaming service. Hundreds of movies and series that’ll never see the light of day because… well, there isn’t a good excuse why. If we had to guess, we’d bet that money is involved. One of those projects is Batman: Caped Crusader, an animated series from the minds of JJ Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm.

So, why are we even talking about this? Well, Caped Crusader isn’t dead yet, with Amazon confirming that the series would be moving house and that it would be getting a second season – both on Prime Video. Now that’s something South Africans do have access to.

The Dark Knight Returns (from the dead)

HBO Max initially cancelled the series in August 2022, scrapping with it; ‘Merry Little Batman’, ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’, ‘Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical’, ‘Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story’ and ‘The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie’.

Is it just us, or is HBO’s cancellation spree starting to make a bit more sense?

Batman: Caped Crusader is described as “a reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens” of executive producers Timm, Abrams, and Reeves. The series takes inspiration from the original Batman: The Animated Series which ran for 85 episodes with Bruce Timm as the series’ co-creator. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ed Brubaker, a writer of Batman comics is also set to join the Caped Crusader’s creative team as head writer.

If you’re looking for more information, you’ll have to wait like the rest of us. The series is still in active development, with season 1 confirmed to have ten episodes in total. Casting, production details, and release dates have yet to be announced, though we expect that sooner rather than later.
