If you missed out on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge on consoles and PC last year, don’t fret. Netflix has added the title to its library of mobile games – free to any subscriber, because if you weren’t aware, Netflix isn’t just a streamer anymore. It’s also a games company, specifically mobile games. It even has its own studio – Netflix Games – out in the middle of Finland.
Shredder’s Revenge is a modern take on classic TMNT arcade titles, with (somehow) better pixel graphics, beat-em-up levels, and online play. Playing with friends or randos is entirely up to you, with up to six friends able to join at once. Keep in mind, cross-play is available – but only between Android and iOS devices.
Revenge is a dish best served on mobile
We haven’t spent a whole lot of time with Shredder’s Revenge just yet. We admit we were worried about how this would all work using touch-screen controls. We played (and beat) the first level, and we can confirm that our doubts were unfounded. The game runs just as smoothly as you’d like it to, with enough combos and fighting strategies to rival Elden Ring. Okay, maybe it’s not that extensive, but it comes close.
We beat the first level in single-player mode (as Leonardo), on normal difficulty (don’t judge us) without breaking a sweat. Except for the game’s first boss. We went in a little too cockily, and almost had our backsides handed to us. We didn’t, but it was pretty close.
Enemies are varied enough to give you a challenge, with some of them pulling out shields at level one. It forces players to use all the buttons at their disposal, of which there are plenty, but that’s just a warmup. Once you’ve fought your first ten or so ninjas, you’re ready to take on Bebop, the game’s first boss at the end of chapter one. Just don’t make the same mistake we did – Bepob isn’t a trifle you can overcome in seconds. We can only imagine just how difficult this gets after a couple of levels.
Worth getting to level two
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is one of the few mobile games that has hooked us enough to keep us coming back for more. If you’d like to give it a shot with your friends, you’ll need a Netflix subscription and the app downloaded on your phone (or tablet). Open the Netflix app (Android, iOS) and find the ‘Games’ tab at the bottom of your screen. Open Shredder’s Revenge, and you’ll be whisked away to your phone’s local app store. That’s it. Download and start kicking shell.
