The 2022 FIFA World Cup saw plenty of world records broken this year. We got to see the most goals ever scored in the tournament (172), Mbappe scored the most goals for a player aged 23 or younger (8) and there were also the most deaths in the build-up to the tournament itself (37 – according to The Guardian). It wasn’t all doom and gloom though. Well, not for Google.

Google Search also saw records being broken where the World Cup was concerned, recording its highest volume of traffic ever during the tournament according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. That’s because Google became the go-to place for World Cup stats and figures – not to mention for scores and match times.

Ogling the beautiful game

Even though Google did add specific Search functionality for the duration of the World Cup, it wasn’t what helped it pull the big numbers. The tournament itself was just so good, leading up to one of the best finals we’ve ever seen. Not just in the footballing world, but the sporting world in general. The final, which concluded the tournament on Sunday, saw Lionel Messi (the GOAT) square up against Kylian Mbappe’s (future GOAT?) French side in a thrilling 3-3 match that went to penalties. It’s no wonder Google was ablaze with searches throughout the entirety of the World Cup.

Google hasn’t released actual figures for its Search department for the World Cup, though we’re hoping that changes in the near future. It would make for an interesting read.
