Last year Apple’s Project Titan, a rumoured self-driving car, received a serious shot in the arm when Hyundai spilled some beans it really shouldn’t have. The Korean automaker later had to walk back its comments, but the project rumoured since at least 2015, leapt to prominence among more than just hardcore tech watchers.
Unfortunately, everybody, from serious tech heads to Apple’s target customers will have to wait a little longer until they see the fruits of Project Titan. At least, that’s according to the folks who have spoken with Bloomberg. A reveal of the vehicle has been pushed back to 2026.
Titan of industry?
Apple’s vehicular ambitions are also undergoing a few changes, according to the unnamed sources familiar with the project. The vehicle won’t be fully self-driving but it will include some autonomous capability. Said capability will be reserved for highway driving, just like most other autopilot functions out there at the moment.
Apple will include a steering wheel and pedals in their car as a result. Originally the company’s car, which will also be an EV, was supposed to drop both of those for a fully hands-free experience. Creating a true self-driving vehicle has proved to be a mission even for the wizards who reside in the Cupertino flying saucer.
Apple, as is usual when information is revealed by anonymous sources, has not yet made any comment on the fate of Project Titan. It seems all but certain it’s coming but we’ll have to wait several more years before we see what form it takes.
