1Password introduces ‘sign in with’ third-party browser extension

Password 1Password

The stakes are getting higher for password management platforms as they strive to find a balance between keeping your passwords safe and also making it easier for you to log in.

1Password has unveiled a new feature that reduces the need for remembering multiple usernames and passwords.

The password manager’s new ‘sign in with’ browser extension lets users automatically save, store, and autofill their usernames and password in third-party browsers. It’ll definitely make life easier when signing in, but last week’s hack at LastPass, another password management platform, may make users uneasy about trusting third-party applications with their passwords.

The Last 1Password?

Last week, LastPass CEO Karim Toubba said the company detected “unusual activity within a third-party cloud storage service, which is currently shared by both LastPass and its affiliate, GoTo.” Hackers gained information from the previous hack, in August, to access what the company refers to as “certain elements” of LastPass users. Despite the latest hack, LastPass says the users’ passwords remain “safely encrypted due to the app’s Zero Knowledge architecture.”

Hopefully, 1Password’s link to third parties won’t leave users exposed to hacking.

“While single sign-on is helpful in reducing the number of passwords needed, it’s still a hassle for people to keep tabs on which third-party provider was used. Our new browser extension feature alleviates this by allowing users to sign in to their favorite apps and websites with one click,” says Steve Won, chief product officer at 1Password.

Users can now opt to sign in using third-party credentials including Apple, Google, Twitter, and Microsoft, and browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Brave.

Using a desktop or mobile app, users can also view and edit thirds- party information. The new browser extension feature is available to customers with individual and family plans.
