How much time do you spend tapping through WhatsApp statuses? We imagine it’s a lot. Especially if you have friends who upload paragraphs that can be summarised in a single sentence. Instead of muting them, you may soon be able to listen to their ‘new’ thoughts as you carry on with the rest of your day.
WhatsApp is reportedly working on an upgrade that will let users post voice statuses. Users will also be able to choose a background color to go with their generally broadcast voice notes. These will appear as a message bubble to their contacts.
The Meta-owned messaging platform’s new feature is under development for Android users. This week, WABetaInfo said WhatsApp is working on voice status updates on the iOS beta.

Similar to current status updates, users will have the option to select who they’d like to share their end-to-end encrypted voice status with based on their privacy settings. A voice status will automatically play when a contact views the update in the Status tab.
Don’t get too excited. It’s not a podcast. A WhatsApp voice status upload is expected to be up to 30 seconds in length. Please…and we repeat, please avoid long speeches. There’s a time and place for that and it’s not on WhatsApp.
