Check out some of Checkers’ best Black Friday deals, including air fryers, baby seats, and more

Checkers might offer one of the country’s foremost delivery apps but there’s at least one time of year that it attempts to get you in stores. This weekend’s Black Friday sale, whether South Africans are at the standard, Hyper, or dedicated baby stores, is all about being there in person.

And that’s because the grocery store’s deals require that you physically touch them in order to purchase them. It makes a sort of sense. Sending those folks with the barcode scanners around to harvest massive sales won’t leave much for anyone else to buy. Plus, stores crammed full of people always look good on social media.

Still, if you must, then you must. Checkers has a considerable number of products on offer for this Black Friday. Some are as cheap as 50% off, others are combo deals where the cheapest one is free. Here’s a brief rundown of what you can find at the store from 24 to 27 November this year.

Checkers

Standard groceries are getting more expensive thanks to… oh, many reasons. Any time of the year when you can bag a massive bargain, you should probably snag it. There just seem to be more of them around. Everyone’s favourite COVID-19 item, massive stacks of toilet paper, is heavily discounted (as long as you have a loyalty card). And, just like pre-lockdown, there’s a limit to how many you can take home.

Various Nestle ice creams also receive the discount treatment, so expect the fridges to be bare of just about everything. Particularly if it’s load shedding on a particularly hot day in your neighbourhood.

Finally, your feline friend can have massive amounts of food for less money. Any ‘Buy 2, get 3’ special tends to be a bargain, even if you’re just helping the store shift out older stock. Maybe check those sell-by dates, yeah?

Checkers Hyper

On the slightly more tech-related side, there’s a slight caveat with these (and approximately 26 other) items. You don’t just have to visit a Checkers. You’ve got to slog your way into a Hyper store to snag these. Since the headliner is last year’s meme purchase, an air fryer, it might well be worth it. The Philips 6.2-litre air fryer has had a third lopped off its regular price.

You could, if you happen to have a valid TV license, also pick up a JVC Android TV. We reckon Checkers’ pricing is a little optimistic — that discount isn’t as deep as you’d think from the official advertising material — but it is the cheapest you can find this set at. Right now, anyway. Maybe someone will notice that they’ve been undercut by a hundred bucks.

Or, if you’re in the market for a gift that will cost someone else money forever, you could pick up a Nescafe Lumio Dolce Gusto coffee machine. It’s not the dinky little coffee maker that’s costly. It’s the disposable pods that’ll crush your wallet at the end of the day.

Checkers Little Me

Children are the most expensive gift you can ever receive. This is why stores put tracking devices on baby formula — because you should only feed them well if you can afford it, apparently. Still, this also means that parents are always on the lookout for a bargain. More than twenty items are on special at the company’s dedicated Little Me baby stores. Some of these (found here) are also in stock at regular grocery stores but if you’re after a cot, a stroller, a breast pump, or various walking rings, you’ll have to head in-store.

And you’ll probably want to, if you’re a new parent. The above ISOFIX-compatible car seat is just the start, as there’s a pricier model with 360° rotation hiding in stores somewhere.

But that completely misses the single best item new parents can own. That would be an Angelcare nappy bin, complete with two complete refill cartridge sets. Drop this off at the baby shower and you’ll immediately be the favourite aunt or uncle (or grandparent — we don’t know your life).
