South Africa is bringing in three renewable wind stations to combat load shedding

wind stations

You may not be aware but South Africa has been having a rough time lately. That’s right, the board game scene here is abysmal. It’s the country’s biggest problem, closely followed by the constant on and off of the lights. The government may not be able to help with the board games, but it can help keep the lights on.

And fortunately, they’re trying. South Africa is finally moving forward with a plan that will net us three onshore wind power stations, out of a total of 25. The point, as you can imagine, is to help keep the lights on for longer than three hours at a time. We’re looking at you, Eskom.

If only we were in Kansas

San Kraal Wind Power, Phezukomoya Wind Power and The Coleskop Wind Power stations are all nearing an official sign-off, after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals. These three aren’t the only stations that will be bringing renewable energy to South Africa. A further 22 wind and solar stations are on the way. Eventually. An initiative this large costs a lot of money. Like, R50 billion-lot of money.

And what would these do for us? Well, forecasters are predicting the stations to bring in 2,600MW once all is said and done. This is great and all, but when you take the 17,121MW Eskom is currently missing into consideration, it’s a pretty far cry from saving the country. Still, 2,600MW is nothing to sneeze at. Anything that could help Eskom bring us down another stage.

For now, though, we’ve just got the three power stations on the way. Each brings in around 140MW on its own. We’ll keep you updated on the rest. We’re probably still a ways away from getting them over the finish line.
