Rain, one of South Africa’s more popular 5G network providers, has launched a new special that sees customers receiving two data packages for the price of one. The promotion revolves around the upcoming Rugby World Cup Sevens (taking place between 9 and 11 September), of which Rain is a sponsor.
Bless the 5G Rains
The package costs R1,000/m over 24 months, saving R1,000/m on a second (free) package that someone else in the family can make use of. Rain’s site doesn’t detail network speeds, simply stating that the package comes with ‘ultra-fast’ 5G speeds. That’s great and all, but we’d like to know what we’re purchasing beforehand.
Though it’s not explicitly stated, we expect this is Rain’s 100MB/s offering. This is still the company’s best package at the moment. It’ll be speedy enough, provided both of you are in the coverage area.
The idea is to share the extra package with a family member, or even a friend living somewhere else. According to the promotion’s T&Cs, the secondary user will be sent a ‘share token’ that gives that user access to the internet, free for 24 months. That token lets your chosen user create a new Rain ID and sign up for the package, free of charge. It is, obviously, a once-off thing.
The 24-month promotion term could be extended if Rain chooses to do so. The company… probably will not choose to do so.

Before choosing a friend to hand this gift to, make sure they’re in an area that offers 5G coverage. If they aren’t you’ll need to choose a new friend. You might lose the one you promised two years of free internet to, but you’ll have a new best friend. One that lives in an area with 5G. Said friend will have to do all that fun RICA stuff first, however.
There’s no official end date for the promotion, so you need to act fast. It could be an extremely limited-time promotion. We suspect the vagueness is rather the point.
