LG’s UltraFine ergonomic screen moves to keep up with roving eyes

The LG UltraFine Display Ergo AI monitor will debut at IFA 2022 in Berlin

LG believes its upcoming self-adjusting monitor is the answer to the average office worker’s poor posture. It’ll do this by combining AI, a camera, and some user compensation. Called the LG UltraFine Display Ergo AI monitor, the new tech will debut at IFA 2022 in Berlin.

The screen that’s got your back

LG’s Ergo AI monitor will continuously monitor a user’s posture with a built-in camera. Along with some AI smarts, the screen can change its height and tilt to align with a user’s eye line. The purpose of this is to prevent them from falling into poor posture over time by remaining in a single position for too long.

The monitor’s arm allows it to adjust screen height (0 ~ 160mm) and tilt (-20º ~ +20º)

How this will be received remains to be seen. It’s easy to imagine constant movement frustrating you or even your office mates. For this reason, the UltraFine monitor has three ergonomics-enhancing modes: AI Motion, Continuous Motion, and Periodic Motion. The company hasn’t explained this yet, but they seem self-explanatory. AI Motion will hand adjustment control over to the AI system. Continuous should constantly keep up with user movement, while Periodic will likely only adjust when users don’t return to a decent position after a set amount of time.

The public will get to see these functions at IFA this weekend. The monitor will be on display at LG’s stall at the annual show if you happen to be in Germany this weekend. The 31.5-inch 4K (3840 x 2160) IPS display comes with 95 percent coverage of DCI-P3 and HDR10. LG believes it’s screen is a “…customized, comfort-enhancing workstation solution for busy professionals”.

Work hard, Play hard!

LG’s 240Hz gaming monitor will also be debuted at this year’s IFA

At the same time, the company will also debut a screen for gamers. The UltraGear OLED Gaming Monitor is LGs first 45-inch OLED screen with an 800R curvature. A 240Hz refresh rate and 0.1-millisecond Gray-to-Gray (GTG) response time is topped by LG’s anti-glare/low reflection coating. LG wants to draw users into on-screen action while reducing visual distractions. A 240Hz refresh rate and a 45in screen seems like a very effective way to achieve that.

Pricing and availability for LG’s new monitor tech will show up after its IFA showing. IFA 2022 starts on Friday, 2 September, and continues until Tuesday, 6 September.
