It’s officially official. Apple has released imagery and the slogan for this year’s iPhone and Apple Watch launch. “Far Out” could refer to anything, but probably has nocturnal connotations. If you’ve been paying attention, all signs point to the iPhone 14 and Watch Series 8 coming on 7 September 2022.
The event will be broadcast live at 19h00 SAST from the Steve Jobs Theatre at Apple HQ on all the usual platforms. We’ll be covering the event on the night but from the comforts of our respective homes. Apple isn’t flying us to Cupertino, California to join them in person… this time.
Apple, but make it spacey

The expected hardware has been well-documented by now (thanks, Mark) but to recap, we’re expecting four new iPhone 14 models. A base model 6.1in iPhone 14 and a slightly more powerful Pro version, and a 6.7in iPhone 14 Max and Pro Max. Apple is supposed to be dropping the notch in favour of a hole punch for the selfie cam. There reportedly won’t be a mini version because the iPhone 12 and 13 minis didn’t sell so well.
The Watch Series 8 will feature three models for the first time, including a new Apple Watch SE, the base Apple Watch Series 8, and a new ‘Pro’ model. That’s according to Apple whisperer Mark Gurman. Gurman reckons this year’s Apple Watch will feature a redesign that will include a rugged look for the Pro model.
This hardware event has a decidedly spacey theme. The Apple logo seems to be made out of stars. The ‘Far out’ text on the invites leads us down the same road. Then, to really drive the point home, “Go for launch” appears in the official tweet.
This could just be a play on words because the fruit company is launching products, but part of the fun during the build-up is to speculate about any surprises. Maybe a dedicated astrophotography mode like on the Google Pixel 4? The six distinct audio tones that play in the video could mean 6x optical zoom is coming as well, but that’s really scraping the speculation barrel.
