Google has announced that its Google TV app is finally coming to South Africa. The company has been expanding to loads of new territories over the past few months. Following today’s announcement, the service is now available in over 100 countries. The release of Google TV in so many countries is another nail in Google Play Movies and TV’s coffin.
Now it’s time for the bad news. If you’re an Android user in SA, you’ll have to wait a bit longer for the new Google TV app. iOS users, on the other hand, can download the revamped app whenever they’d like.
According to 9to5Google, the tech conglomerate is bringing the Android app to South African shores pretty soon. Along with any other regions still waiting for their crack at it.
There is a silver lining. South Africans can currently download the new app straight to their (non-Android) smart TVs. That should hold you over until the Android version is officially released here.
What is Google TV?
The way Google TV works is by sorting and aggregating all your favourite content in one spot. If you’re an avid Netflix, Disney+ or YouTube user, then this would be the perfect addition for you. Google TV keeps track of what you’re watching and offers you an easier way of reaching them in one handy spot.
And of course, the content you purchased on the older service won’t be going anywhere. Once you’ve installed the new Google TV app, it will be available there.
Google gave no official dates for when South Africa can expect the Android version of the app. Google said that “all remaining regions with the Google Play Movies & TV app will get the revamped Google TV in the coming months”. That’s about as much information as our search overlords have deigned to share so far.
Because iOS and smart TV platforms, already have the app, it’s hard to imagine Google would drag its feet for a release to its own platform.
