If you’ve ever sent a message only to instantly regret it, you’ve probably wanted WhatsApp to add an ‘edit message’ feature before. Well, your wish has been granted. Sort of. It looks like the feature may launch quite soon, according to WABetaInfo.
This isn’t the first time WhatsApp has considered letting users edit messages. WABetaInfo says WhatsApp Beta users got the feature to test almost five years ago. WhatsApp eventually scrapped the idea. Now, they’re bringing it back. Hopefully, the app won’t leave us hanging again.
Making a change
The way the feature will work is by highlighting a message with a ‘long-press’. This will bring up an Edit button alongside the ‘Info’ and ‘Copy’ buttons. See the image below.
WABetaInfo reckons the feature won’t arrive with an edit history for the edited messages but says that since the feature is still under development, this may change.
No news is known on whether a time limit will be imposed for using the edit button or not. It makes sense that WhatsApp would want that feature built-in, as it could lead to trouble in various ways. The messaging company already has a time limit included for its ‘delete for everybody’ feature. You can’t delete a message for your message partner if the time limit has been exceeded.
It’s expected that WhatsApp will release the feature for both iOS and Desktop beta users soon enough. At the moment only Android beta testers can test this feature out.
At the time of writing, it’s not known when we will see the new feature in the stable build of WhatsApp. Since it’s in beta testing already, it probably won’t be long before we get our hands on it. Edit responsibly, kids.
