Sonos leaks suggest a new subwoofer is on the way

Just last week, we saw the announcement for Sonos’ newest and cheapest soundbar – the Sonos Ray. You may have also noticed the lack of a similarly priced subwoofer to pair it with. At the moment, the only Sonos subwoofer on the market costs $750 (~R12,000). This costs more than the Ray by a long shot – it just wouldn’t make sense to pair it with a subwoofer costing nearly double the price.

That’s why the company is gearing up for the release of a newer, cheaper subwoofer, designed to be paired with the Ray, Beam and Arc models. The initial leak happened a few months ago when a slight mishap on the Sonos app caused the new subwoofer to show up. The leak confirmed the name – the Sonos Sub Mini – with more info arriving as time went on.

The leak was provided by The Verge, as was the 3D render of what the Sonos Sub Mini may look like.

Woof, woof – Sonos let the dogs out

If you aren’t particularly sure whether you need a subwoofer or not, you do. Subwoofer owners swear by them because they make such a difference when watching a movie or TV show. When working with Sonos however, it’s just a bonus. Pairing a Sonos bar with a Sonos sub will automatically adjust the output of the bar to focus on higher frequencies, leaving the bass to the woofer.

As you’ll see on the 3D render, the Sub Mini draws your attention to the big pill-shaped hole going through the centre. This is similar to the other Sonos subwoofer, except that hole is rectangular. Sonos certainly seem to have a style. The hole won’t be there just for show, however. If the Sub Mini is following a similar design pattern, it makes sense it will be there for the same reason, which is for the acoustic ports on the hole’s sides.

When it comes to pricing and specs, not even The Verge could get a hold of those details. But for now, we have a small idea of what the new Sub Mini will look like, and possibly be able to do. But be sure, when the news comes, we’ll be covering it.

While we’re on the subject of Sonos leaks… we may start getting fewer product leaks for a while. Recently, according to rumours, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence is frustrated by all the leaks coming from within. “I know it’s hard for all of you but … we want to make sure that when we actually have it ready, we bring it out to the world, and that’s when we talk about it,” he said on an earnings call last week.
