Vodacom is chucking aside its British roots to team up with a South African football team. The goal? To provide funeral cover to South African families. And maybe to drum up a little local support for the Orlando Pirates.
The two South African entities are launching a product called Orlando Pirates Funeral Cover. The service is backed by Vodacom Life Assurance Company and is open to anyone (who downloads the Orlando Pirates Official App).
Vodacom acts as a defender
Cover starts from R60/m, but this scales based on how extensive you want your funeral cover. The group offers cover for up to seventeen family members per policy. Up to ten children may be added to the policy at no extra cost.
A maximum payout of R50,000 is available for funeral expenses. This is, apparently, paid within 48 hours of approval. Vodacom Life Assurance promises “…no paperwork, no medical exams, no blood tests and no brokers involved”.

Vodacom’s head of sponsorship Michelle van Eyden said, “When you lose a loved one, it should be a time to honour their life and not worry about the financial burden of funeral expenses. We want supporters to know that at such a difficult time, you are not alone. You are part of this family, and we’ve got you covered”.
The Orlando Pirates Official App is available on both Android and iOS devices. The download is free. Besides acting as a storefront for the joint funeral cover partnership, it also offers fans updates about the team. Fixture details and live match results are also a thing, as is access to PiratesTV. Which is the team’s version of Netflix Originals. There is, of course, a subscription tier offered to fans as well.
