We’ll say this about Chinese tech company Huawei — it has no idea how to give up. There’s a new product showcase ahead for the brand, set to take place at the end of this month.
The event isn’t local — yet. It’ll take place in China on 28 April, but rumour suggests that we’ll see at least some of the new tech launched here in South Africa. Other bits… are far less likely to turn up. Pity.
Huawei ready?
Information on Huawei’s event turned up in the form of a poster published by the company itself. The image, since deleted, showed off something called the Smart Screen V Pro. We don’t get those here, obviously, but there’s apparently more on offer. The event it was talking about is expected to feature a collection of other devices as well.
And, perhaps strangely, it’s possible we’ll see almost all of them. The Smart Screen probably won’t make it to South Africa. But the company’s Band 7 and Watch GT 3 Pro almost certainly will. A source on Chinese social media platform Weibo reckons those will be revealed next week.
In addition, the company’s new Mate Xs 2 folding phone is expected to turn up. It’s a little less certain whether we’ll see that. We did get the Huawei P50 Pocket, but the Mate X series is still missing in action. More likely are new routers from the company — new AX6 and Q6 models are expected at the showcase. And then there are new MateBook models, with new chipsets in tow, expected. There’s a chance those will also launch in South Africa.
But the ‘when’ and ‘how much’ are, for now, still mysterious. Huawei’s event still isn’t properly official, and the list of products is still rumoured. Even when the event is a done deal, it’s designed for the Chinese market. Anything the company showcases next week will probably make its way here. But it could be several months before any of the devices make landfall on the African continent. Still, at least we’ll know what’s on the way.
