*hits blunt* “Hey, you know what would make Instagram even better? Let’s add NFTs to it!” This probably isn’t how it actually went down, but it really can’t be too far off.
Meta founder and all-round galaxy brain Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that support for NFTs is coming to the picture-posting platform. Speaking at SXSW, Zuckerberg said, “We’re working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term.”
NFT #sponcon nightmare ahead
Zuckerberg added, “I’m not ready to kind of announce exactly what that’s going to be today. But over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, hopefully over time, be able to mint things within that environment.”
So it’s not just the ability to post your very expensive monkey picture. The platform might be used to actually mint NFTs. That suggests that Meta plans to integrate Instagram into a blockchain. Which it will, in all likelihood, develop itself. But given how useless blockchains are for anything that isn’t cryptocurrency or stealing overpriced JPGs, it doesn’t seem like the best idea in the world. Hence the blunt joke at the top of the page.
Zuckerberg also had something to say about how NFTs and digital clothing might work in Meta’s metaverse. He said, “I would hope that you know, the clothing that your avatar is wearing in the metaverse, you know, can be basically minted as an NFT and you can take it between your different places.”
He did qualify the statement, adding, “There’s like a bunch of technical things that need to get worked out before that’ll really be seamless to happen.” Like creating compatible hardware. Or introducing the ability to cross-code across many platforms with zero compatibility issues. Sure, let’s give that to Meta to work out.
