Apple could have a surprisingly powerful announcement at tonight’s event

Accessibility

Today is the big day, if you’re an Apple stan. Tonight at 20:00 SAST, Tim Cook will stand on his stage, in his field, or in front of his fancy building. Or maybe he’ll be inside the fancy building if he’s feeling bold. He’ll tell us about Apple’s newest products and then we’re going to go out and buy them – when they’re available.

There have been mentions floating around online about what uncle Tim will unveil since before the date was even confirmed. We covered those here. But the folks at Apple weren’t going to let us rest easy, it seems. At least not according to Apple rumour savant Mark Gurman. We might well see some new tech tonight.

How many Macs does it take to secure a market segment?

On top of the rumoured budget-orientated iPhone SE, refreshed iPad Air and possible M2 chips, we could also see something new, called the ‘Mac Studio’ and a new display to go with it. 9to5Mac first alerted us to the new device, describing it as a hybrid between the Mac Pro and Mac Mini. This one’s expected to use Apple’s M1 Pro and Max chips.

A new monitor, possibly called the Studio Display, will reportedly be running iOS. Meaning it’ll also be powered by Apple’s A-series chips found in iPhones and iPads. We could see two versions of this display, a successor to the eye-wateringly expensive Pro Display XDR for professionals and a wallet-friendly(ish) version aimed at consumers.

Concrete details are thin but luckily you don’t have long to wait to find out more. Of course, these rumours could all be an elaborate ruse so that the budget iPhone still seems like a surprise. With Apple these days, you can never really be sure.
