Remember the days when your full name, ID number, and final matric exam result were published in the national newspaper? Same here.
Sadly, that time is done. SA’s Department of Basic Education has revealed that it won’t publish learners’ personal information publicly from this year. That’s thanks to our old pal POPIA (the Protection of Personal Information Act).
“In order to comply with the provisions of the POPIA, the usual practice of publishing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results on public platforms (media platforms) will not occur for 2021,” the department said.

Students will now receive their final matric exam results at the school they’re enrolled at. This was also common practice before 2022. The only real change is that newspapers will have a few more pages to fill come January from now on.
“In this way, every learner’s personal information with regards to the outcome of their National Senior Certificate exam will be protected.”
The 2021 national matric results for learners in public schools will be announced on 21 January 2021. Private schools will receive their results from the Independent Education Board (IEB) on 19 January.
