Sony introduces Sony Mobility, new Vision-S 02 SUV prototype at CES 2022

Sony Mobility Vision-S 02

Remember when Sony announced its first car, back in 2020? You know, before the world ended? Well, that situation is becoming permanent. The company, at CES this year, revealed the pending launch of Sony Mobility. What’s that, you ask? Sony’s own car company, of course.

That isn’t all that’s happened in Las Vegas this year. The Vision-S turned up (again), as well as a new SUV called the Vision-S 02. Really imaginative naming there, Sony.

Sudden Sony Mobility

The two Vision-S vehicles are supposedly coming, but first Sony Mobility has to turn up. Sony is forming Sony Mobility Inc. This will launch “…in the spring of 2022, through which the company intends to explore entry into the EV market.”

The Vision-S 01 is currently being tested on standard roads, ahead of a probable retail launch. In the meantime, Sony’s shown off some of the internal design features coming to the vehicles. In a couple of videos, one of which is very lifestyle-focused, the company details why potential drivers should be excited. And there’s no denying that Sony knows how to build an attractive product. The Sony Xperia lineup hasn’t become scarce because they’re unattractive, after all.

Sony’s also playing up the range of tech in the vehicles. The company’s adding “…dynamic range CMOS image sensors and LiDAR sensors that accurately sense three-dimensional space.” Time-of-flight sensors, 5G connectivity, and even advanced audio and video tech — sourced from Sony’s TV division — are also part of the Sony Mobility hardware.

This isn’t the first bit of branching out that Sony’s done. The company’s also started making drones, in addition to game consoles that are very hard to locate. The drone has made it to market, so hopefully, these vehicles will do the same at some point.
