Vehicle designers across a variety of luxury car brands have all had very diverse ideas of what the car of the future should look like. Generally, they include a lot of chrome, overly large wheel arches and interior straight out of The Jetsons.
Meet the BMW Concept XM
BMW’s vibing with Tesla if its latest hybrid concept is considered — the Concept XM is a production model SUV, and the second standalone M-model the brand’s ever made. And it’ll make it to market in 2022.
Its angled exterior reminds us of the controversial Cybertruck bakkie announced by Elon Musk back in 2019. The Concept XM, however, brings with it the large grille the brand’s been experimenting with on the 4 Series and the M3. It slots in as a ‘coupe’ version of the X7, and will only come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Which will make it the first hybrid under the ‘M’ label, and for good reason. EV tech is a major focus for incoming vehicles across the motoring industry.
The Concept XM is fitted with a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 combustion engine, with a 750 horsepower and 999Nm electric motor. It sports an EV range of just 48km (30 miles) — and that’s exactly what you’ll get once the car actually makes its way to roads. Which isn’t all that great, but the EV portion is just used supplementally to that beefy V8.
