Could the new Motorola Edge 30 Ultra be the next flagship killer?

Recent leaks have fingered the still-rumoured Motorola Edge 30 Ultra to be the first Andriod smartphone coming to market with Qualcomm’s latest system on a chip (SoC).

According to German tech blog TechnikNews, the device going by the internal code name “Rogue”, will ship with the also-still-unconfirmed Snapdragon SoC, the Snapdragon 898. Qualcomm has not confirmed the SoC itself yet, but going from the model numbers of last years chip and the chip the Edge 30 Ultra is supposed to ship with, it seems highly likely.

Motorola looks to Edge out rivals

Whether or not the new Snapdragon can perform competitively with Apple’s A15 chip we’ll have to wait to see. The other specs for the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra seem quite compelling though, that is if the rumours are true. The front-facing selfie camera is said to use a 60MP sensor. That, coupled with the two rear 50MP sensors for the main and ultrawide cameras, makes for a pretty decent set of shooters. On paper anyway, let’s hope the image processing isn’t the weak point.

The Edge 30 Ultra will also reportedly feature a 5,000mAh battery and a 68W charger. While that isn’t the fastest on the market, it’s a lot faster than Apple’s latest offering of 27W. The handset will also offer either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 memory and come with 128GB or 256GB of storage.

The Motorola Edge 30 is said to have 6.67in a Full HD OLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate. On top of that, you’ll get an IP52 rating and Android 12 out of the box.

Because Motorola has an inconsistent track record when it comes to releasing its devices over the last couple of years, we don’t know for sure when the Edge 30 Ultra will come to SA. Going from previous releases, it’ll only be available here as an import. Probably a good idea to wait for the company to confirm specs before ordering. It is supposed to launch in January so it isn’t too long of a wait.
