Apple’s Watch has had the feature for a while, now Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 wearable becomes the first to get an official walkie talkie app. The app, perhaps fittingly, is simply called WalkieTalkie — you can’t possibly guess what that does based purely on its name, though.
Come in, Galaxy Watch 4
The official app was first spotted by the folks over at XDA Developers (on the Android store, obviously) and it allows Watch 4 owners to chat to other Watch 4 owners using only their wristwear. Just like using a walkie talkie, really.
But there are limitations, obviously. You can only talk to other Watch 4 owners. Owners of the previous watches in the series don’t get to pretend they’re super-spies from the 1980s, unfortunately. But it’s easy enough to get it working, even though your potential pool of folks to chat to is limited.
The app runs independently of your smartphone but Samsung recommends that its first usage should be while it’s connected through a handset. After that, users can create their own channels. Once that’s done, you can talk to nearby people by pressing the mic button on the watch face and talking into your wrist like it is 1945.
