If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that Standard Bank launched its own mobile network back in 2018, offering its banking customers access to mobile connections ever since. The fairly new MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), dubbed SB Mobile, recently revealed competitively priced LTE data bundles starting at R130p/m for 20GB of data.
These aren’t special prices either — it’s just what SB Mobile’s fixed-LTE packages cost. This means these prices are only valid for 4G services in a fixed location — meaning you won’t be able to carry it around as you do a Rain SIM in a portable mobile router.
Being an MVNO, the mobile operator doesn’t own its own mobile networking infrastructure, and in this case, it’s piggybacking on the MTN network. When it first launched back in 2018, the bank signed a deal to use the Cell C network.
“All the plans are offered on a month-to-month basis, with no long-term contract lock-in. Standard Bank has recommended clients use only MTN-approved routers for the best experience,” TechCentral reports.
It looks like most of the monthly plans include a router in the package anyway.
